THE BATTLE OF THE WASHITA: 140 YEARS AGO
November 27, 1868 - November 27, 2008
WAR ON TERROR IN OKLAHOMA
A grateful Garry Owen to the heroes who fought and died at Washita to destroy the Cheyenne terror cell.
Garry Owen to Major Joel Elliott and his 16 men who died with their boots on against an overwhelming force of Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors.
Garry Owen to every man of the 7th cavalry, from George Armstrong Custer to John Ryan, Thomas Custer or Albert Barnitz, who conducted the successful operation.
and, of course, a loud Garry Owen to the 350 victims of Chief Black Kettle's terror and, as always, a special Garry Owen to young hostages and martyrs Clara Blinn and her little William.
We will never forget.
